A Toast To You

A Toast To You “A Toast To You” is a monthly programme brought to you by Spreydon Toastmasters Club, a branch of Toastmasters International –a non-profit educational organisation whose purpose is to help members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills, with the motto “where leaders are made”. The hosts of this programme are Dani Rius, Margaret Langham and Krissy Lynch. Dani is the founder of this radio programme, which came about as part of her effort as a VP PR to promote the Club in a way that it could at the same time contribute to the broader community of Canterbury. Margaret, Sergeant of Arms, enthusiastically shared her interest in participating in the radio show and creatively named our show “A Toast To You”. Last but not least, Krissy is excited to come along and share her experience as one of the oldest members of the club. She is an inspiration to me, as one of the newer members of the Club. Krissy is our new to-be President of our Club, taking office in July 2017. Congratulations to Krissy for such an important role! Dani describes herself as a “third citizen”, or global citizen, having been born and bred in different countries in her youth. She grew up in USA and Germany and fleetingly lived in Argentina, the home of her parents. As an adult, she moved to Canada, became Canadian, and then had her only son in England before she settled in Christchurch over 7 years ago. She proudly says she is a Cantabrian now, having experienced the Christchurch earthquakes. Toastmasters has helped Dani to become more confident in expressing who she really is without the common anxiety and shame she would experience from feeling like a square peg in a round hole when living in different cultures. She now gives inspirational talks, which she describes as "a natural progression from her educational and lifestyle coaching business". Krissy has worked in central government jobs for the last 7-8 years doing administration work. “Before this I worked in London for 7 years where I worked in customer service. I had lost confidence in presenting information to groups. I have now been involved with Toastmasters for the last 5 years and I have gained a lot of my confidence back over this period of time and I have developed my speech writing skills and Leadership skills.” Margaret tells us that she originally came from the North Island. She says, “I have lived in both Sydney and Perth for 15 years before coming to Christchurch in 1996. I have been a registered nurse for more than 30 years, having worked in various clinical settings. Toastmasters has provided me with the opportunity to learn to speak confidently in front of people. I have also learned various speaking styles from the more experienced speakers. Toastmasters provides the opportunity to gain leadership skills.” Join us each first Monday of the month at 12:00pm on PlainsFM and listen to interesting stories from the different Toastmasters members and be inspired to develop your own communication and leadership skills with us!
