Art Not Science is a monthly programme produced by The Physics Room Contemporary Art SpaceThe Physics Room is dedicated to developing and promoting contemporary art and critical discourse in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Tune in every third Friday of the month at 8pm for a mix of artist talks, panel discussions, and other events that give some more insight into our exhibitions. You can listen to the podcast via plainsfm.org.nz when it suits.

A talk with Rhea Maheshwari and Kahurangiariki Smith, and curator Charlotte Huddleston on our current exhibition Two Oceans at Once. The artists explore ways of re-writing and re-telling stories. They challenge the singular voice of written and canonised history and suggest that subjective, experiential, and plural histories are equally important. Two Oceans at Once is the second iteration of an exhibition under this title curated by Cameron Ah-Loo Matamua and Charlotte Huddleston and features work by Rhea Maheshwari, Skawennati, and Kahurangiariki Smith

In this episode we have Tanu Gago and Tapuaki Helu talking about Tanu’s exhibition SAVAGE IN THE GARDEN, which showed at The Physics Room earlier this year. SAVAGE IN THE GARDEN presents a series of photographs of Helu and audio recordings responding to provocations about what it means to be a Queer Pacific Island man and centres queerness as a site for exploration and a pressure point for open social discussion.
