Sounds Catholic

Sounds Catholic Sounds Catholic covers all things Catholic - Catholic thought, Catholic prayer, Catholic music, Catholic people and Catholic action. As the Tertiary Chaplaincy Co-ordinator for the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, Sounds Catholic host and producer Ken Joblin has access to not only the leaders within these institutions, but also those involved at the grassroots level. It’s this mix of opinion, knowledge, and experience that make for a programme of great depth and broad interest. Interviewing visitors to the Canterbury region alongside Christchurch citizens who are involved in Church life, Sounds Catholic speaks with those who have specialist knowledge of Catholicism and can spread their knowledge to the Canterbury community. The show also features live recordings of our key Catholic choirs, as well as high quality recordings of Catholic music from New Zealand and abroad. To achieve the “out-of-studio” sound that Ken prefers recordings are also made in pubs, at presentations, in people’s homes and offices, and in churches. Sounds Catholic is aimed at motivated Catholics, questioning Catholics and people who wish to hear a non-secular worldview. The show aims to make people think, question their assumptions about the Catholic Church and encourage listeners to want to know more about us. As the sole sound engineer, editor, interviewer, programme producer and host, Ken’s impressive array of skills is amplified by Ken’s achievement of producing a radio show despite being blind. "Being a blind person, I've always loved radio - it is definitely the theatre of the mind" says Ken, who has been blind from a young age. Ken’s attention to detail ensures listeners are taken on a journey into their own personal theatre of the mind. He records not just voice but sounds - water trickling from a baptism plinth, footsteps on a hard stone floor, a church full of people. This creates an intimate feeling of being there. Compiling the programme requires a laptop with blind-specific voice synthesis software and GoldWave, a commercially available audio editor set up at home. A Roland digital recorder is used to record material out in the field, and the final programme is mixed together and goes to air as a stand alone pre-recorded programme. It all comes down to great ears and a deft touch. A labour of love and high standards in radio production have won Sounds Catholic two prestigious New Zealand Radio Awards. These awards recognise the best amongst 12 community access stations throughout the country which are partly funded by NZ on Air. The winning episode of the 2012 NZ Radio Award for Best Spoken/Informational English Language programme featured highlights from a year of challenges faced by the Christchurch diocese, including some dramatic audio of a performance in the Music Centre at the Barbados Street Chapel when the September 2010 earthquake hit and a performance at Christchurch Boys High School during a major June 2011 aftershock. Winning the 2013 NZ Radio Award for Best Spoken/Informational English Language programme was the heart-warming programme “Tiger”, which featured Ken’s personal account of the passing of his treasured guide dog Tiger, offering insights into Christian ways of dealing with grief. Funded by the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch, this weekly programme provides Ken with the satisfaction of creating something he really believes in which draws on his background in theology, spirituality and sacred music. Highlights of the show include capturing one of the Christchurch earthquakes “live”, and an interview with the head of Caritas Jerusalem about the on-going tension between Israel and Palestine. Ken’s personal highlights include the achievement of the National Radio Industry awards, having the programme “Tiger” broadcast twice on Radio New Zealand National, as well as being interviewed on Radio New Zealand National about Sounds Catholic. http://www.chch.catholic.org.nz/radio .
